Learning what to do in an emergency

Today Mr Spence from the Marlborough District Council came to talk to us about being prepared in an emergency like an earthquake. He showed us how much water we would need each day for each person - 10 to 15 litres! And talked to us about what we should have in our emergency kits.

A special visit!

Today we had a special visit from St. John's. They came to give all the children an apple for morning tea as a way of giving back to our community. We were the lucky school who was randomly selected!

Survival talk

Today Constable Al came in to talk to us about his job in Search and Rescue. He told us lots of important things like if you are lost you must stay where you are! He also said that when you are tramping or out in the bush you should be like an onion and wear lots of layers! He showed us what he takes in his pack tramping and what an emergency locator beacon looked like. He told us about how helicopter pilots use night vision goggles to find missing people and that they can see a single lit match from over 10 kms away!

Will it float?

Today for news Oliver shared the cool piece of pumice that he found in his sheep paddock.  We wondered how it got there. Later in the day when Leo was looking at it he wondered about whether it would float. We all made predictions about whether we thought it would float. When we put it in the bucket it did float! We now wonder if the small holes in it will slowly fill up with water and it might sink after a while. We are going to leave it over night and see what happens.
